Ohhhh isn’t Christmas time so wonderful? Isn’t it so crazy and emotional and delightful and challenging and full and lonely and sweet and special? Ha! Yes to all of that.
Busy moms have many things going on outwardly during the holiday season…shopping, wrapping presents, family times, gatherings, and we should mention- trying to help her children focus on their Savior’s birth among many others!
But what about a busy mom’s HEART?
So many things are vying for her heart’s attention and focus. But what mom wants to miss the sweetness, the hope and encouragment, the wonder of Christmas? None, I’m quite certain!
Therefore, in the holiday season, a busy mom NEEDS tools to prepare her heart for Christmas.
I want to share 3 of my favorites!
*1st tool to prepare your heart for Christmas- A Better December: Proverbs to Brighten Christmas
This book! What a treasure. It’s absolutely full of wit and wisdom and you probably won’t be able to put it down to the end. And the end comes almost too soon! It’s a short book that merges poetry, narration, and Scripture with such insight and winsomeness.
Author Steven Estes takes many Proverbs and uses them to impart wisdom about Christmas to us. Here’s a bit of the intro so you can see his fun style.
“About 3000 years ago
the wisest man who ever lived
wrote a HUGE best seller.
A real wick-burner
The funny thing is…
Christmas was still
1000 years off.
His name was Solomon, king of Israel.
Here was one savvy author. A man who had unrolled a few scrolls in his
day- who could handle himself with a quill. His market research nailed
exactly what future readers would need come December…..
(skipping some now)
…His mother probably said,
“What’s a nice Jewish boy
like you doing-
writing about Christmas?”
But Solomon forged ahead, sensing a definite trend on the horizon.
His blockbuster would be about:
Getting through the holidays
For as you know,
if there’s one time of year
when things may not go
The chapters cover things like gifts, contentment, perfectionism, longings, changes, and more!
A Better December is fabulous tool to prepare a busy mom’s heart for Christmas!
*2nd tool to prepare your heart for Christmas- Joy To The World: Daily readings for advent
This gem of a book consists of 25 daily readings that have been taken from a selection Charles Spurgeon’s sermons on the incarnation of Jesus. If you aren’t familiar with Spurgeon, he was a phenomenal preacher in the early 1800’s.
The language has been updated for us who read 200 years later!
His words go deep and are truly timeless!
Here is an exerpt from a day when he is talking about the angels proclaiming “Peace on Earth” when Christ was born!
“Go legalist, work for peace with toil and pain, and you shall
never find it. Go, you that trust in the law; go to Sinai.
Look to the flames that Moses saw, and shrink, and tremble,
and despair. For peace is nowhere to be found but in Him
of whom it is said, “This man shall BE peace.”
And what a peace it is beloved! It is peace like a river,
and righteousness like the waves of the sea. It is the peace
of God that suprasses all understanding, which keeps our
hearts and minds through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This sacred peace between the pardoned soul and God the pardoner;
this marvelous at-one-ment between the sinner and his judge,
this was it that the angels sung when they said, “Peace on Earth.”
It’s deep and thought provoking and a wonderful pause with ample wisdom to reflect upon.
Joy to the World is another wonderful tool to prepare a busy mom’s heart for Christmas!
*3rd tool to prepare your heart for Christmas- Christmas Blessings: Prayers and poems to celebrate the season
If you like poetry, this book will speak to you!
This is a wonderful collection of prayers and poems that lead the reader to appreciate the joy in their life!
It’s such a great collection of writings that capture the true spirit of Christmas. It really keeps one’s perspective on Christ’s birth and all that it means.
Christmas Blessings is a book that you can just flip through and read as much or as little as you want at a time.
It is organized into these sections with many poems and prayers under each section: Christmas Joys, Through Children’s Eyes, Christmas Angels, Graces, Prayers, and Toasts, Christmas Memories, Christmas Reflections, and Inspirations.
One of my favorites is this advent prayer:
Master of both the light and the darkness, send
your Holy Spirit upon our preparations
We who have so much to do to seek quiet spaces to
hear your voice each day.
We who are anxious over many things look forward
to your coming among us.
We who are blessed in so many ways long for the
complete joy of your kingdom.
We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of
We are your people, walking in darkness, yet
seeking the light.
To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”
These 3 tools to prepare a busy mom’s heart for Christmas are great resources!
They have helped me focus on the wonder and joy- the true gifts and glory of Christmas! I pray the same for you!
