Life can be really hard and crazy and challenging all at the same time! These five ways to calm my anxious thoughts are the way to stay at peace no matter what. They can be game changers for you too!
Is it possible to stay calm when life is hard?
If there’s anything we can all agree on, it’s that life is hard. Some days and seasons, life is harder than others.
I’m thankful for the fun and exciting days that life brings as well! But we all know it’s just a part of life that at times, it will be quite difficult. At times, there are different stresses heavy on us and different circumstances that are challenging!
But yes it is so possible to calm your anxious thoughts no matter what comes your way!
Stop anxiety provoking thoughts!
When the stresses, pressures, and challenges of life seem to be coming at you in all directions, anxious thoughts often begin to rise up within.
These five ways to calm those anxious thoughts are sure to STOP them before they even start! Apply these 5 game changers today and see!
1st way to control my anxious thoughts: Taking in God’s Word!
Of all the things that go in our brain in a day… what we listen to, what we watch, what we read, what we think…God‘s Word is of supreme importance.
The Bible is not just a book with some nice things in it, no, “the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
Reading the Bible actually changes us. It actually renews our mind.
So if I’m feeling the anxious thoughts and stress and I take time to read the Bible, it doesn’t even matter if I’m reading something about my specific concern right then. The Word of God brings that comfort and peace that we all long for.
It shapes our perspective which is very calming! For we all need to be daily reminded that God is sovereign over all and we can trust Him and what He’s doing in our lives.
I listen to the Bible on my podcast app when I am exercising, and I also prioritize actually reading and studying it too. It’s the only book you can read endless times and never get to the depths or end of all the truth, wisdom, and treasure within it!
And you’ve heard of the peace that’s possible in Christ that doesn’t even make sense considering what circumtances you may face? That’s why it’s called the peace that TRANSCENDS understanding.
Read it here: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
Consistently taking in the Bible might be the most important way to calm my anxious thoughts.

2nd way to control my anxious thoughts: Exercise!
There is a tremendous amount of research that confirms that exercise has a direct impact on reducing stress and anxiety. I’ve certainly found that to be true in my own life!
Physiologically, your body literally releases stress as you exert yourself in exercise. That is pretty cool! Just taking 20-30 minutes most days to walk, run, swim, bike, etc… makes all the difference in calming your anxious thoughts.
When you feel anxious, your body literally brings on tension and it’s actually fun to exercise and feel that tension go away!
I say exercise is a MUST no matter how crazy your life is. We are only talking about one benefit of exercise to help with the stress and anxiety most of us feel. But there are tons of benefits to exercising and tons of detriments to not exercising!
So get creative if you need, and just do something. You have to simply start somewhere. If it’s getting up a few minutes earlier, great! I started that a couple of years ago and now absolutely don’t miss a day because it makes such a difference!
Or at lunch time, or in the evening, whenever is fine! Just start moving and you’ll experience the calm and peace it brings!
I prefer to get outside to exercise and don’t have time to go to a gym at this phase of my life. But when I can’t go outside, I love this long lasting, durable recumbent bike at a super affordable price. It has served me well for quite a long time!
Consider making exercise a top priority to help control your anxious thoughts!

3rd way to control my anxious thoughts: Laughter!
Yes laughter! Do you think it’s possible to be all wound up with anxiety while you are smiling and laughing? No it isn’t!
We all need to enjoy the humor in life and simply laugh more! When was the last time you laughed- really hard?
If you are struggling to remember when, it’s safe to say that you need to address this lack of laughter in your life!
Let’s go over some easy ways to bring humor in your life!
- If you have little kids… easy! Just open your eyes to the many funny things kids say and do! And allow yourself to laugh!
- One of my favorite ways to stay laughing DAILY is to simply LISTEN to my favorite podcast as I exercise and while I’m driving many times a day shuffling my boys to and fro: The Rick and Bubba show
This radio show is actually the way I stay informed on news rather than tuning into the anxiety producing major network news shows.
Rick and Bubba are hilarious as they break down everything from news headlines to sports to just life in general.
The show is actually a blend of laughter and deeply touching moments as they are both followers of Christ and approach the show from a world and life view that honors God.
Anyway you can listen live on the tunein app, watch live on Youtube, or my favorite, listen to the replays without commercials wherever you listen to podcasts!
Laughing at and with the Rick and Bubba show is one the keys to my daily laughter and not taking everything so seriously.
Talk about controlling anxious thoughts!
- Also taking a few minutes to watch or listen to super funny comedians (such as Tim Hawkins (you’re welcome) and many others is a great way to decompress and see the funny in life around you! PRO tip: Truly funny people don’t need to use foul language and inappropriate shocker content to make you laugh. Choose your comedians [and entertainment] with wisdom!)
- Finally, if you’re blessed to have any of the kind of friends that being around them usually involves laughter, be thankful! Make sure you prioritize spending time with them!
Consider how you can make space in your life to laugh and enjoy yourself more!
4th way to control my anxious thoughts: A weekly day of rest!
Hey, Jesus Christ said it Himself in Mark 2:27– “Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
God made it so that one day a week should be a day of rest and recooperation, renewing and recharging for us. He made us to NEED this.
The way our culture has become does make it challenging to actually do this. It takes intentionality to simply seperate one day a week that is different from the rest. Sunday for us, is going to church for a time of hearing God’s word taught and preached. It’s a day to gather with others and enjoy that time with them.
The sabbath rest for us involves no screen times and no jobs being done, for example. Even if mathematically, you can’t see how you will get everything done if you take a day to rest from such things, it really does work out! God blesses us as we choose to prioritize a day of rest.
And yes, you guessed it. Anxious thoughts are greatly minimized as you enjoy a time of resting from the pressures and crazy of the rest of the week.
Then you start the week ready to go and work hard with renewed energy and peace!
5th way to control my anxious thoughts: Regular times of unplugging from technology!
Technology can be so great, right? So much information right at our fingertips makes life easier in so many ways.
But technology may actually be the cause of the majority of anxious thoughts a person has. Social media alone presents many challenges of comparing, narcissism, and not to mention endless anxiety-producing content in your face.
It is to our GREAT benefit to regularly unplug from all of this. The Sabbath rest day is a great day to just turn off the TV and put your phone, computers, etc in a seperate room and watch how amazing it feels!
This is quite the powerful way to control our anxious thoughts, and I recommend everyone unplug from technology on a regular basis!
