Having the privilege to raise 5 boys may have caused me to become a boy expert in some fun areas. Favorite read-alouds boys will LOVE? I got em!
( I do want to say that girls would enjoy these too in family read-aloud times!) Still, if you can find a book that captivates your son, you have truly succeeded! Because that is all it usually takes for a boy who has no interest in reading to suddenly see the immense value in the written word!
I am so thankful that my wild and crazy boys all love to settle into bed at night with a great book. Do I need to go over the benefits of hearing and reading great literature? It grows their vocabulary, they become better writers and communicaters themselves, the depth of knowledge that can be learned, I could go and on!
Read-alouds are even more special because of the family bonding time. Everyone shares the experience of getting caught up in the story together! It’s too fun!
Here are our top 12 favorite read-alouds boy will love!
#1- Way of the Warrior Kid series by Jocko Willink
These fabulous books are written by a decorated retired Navy SEAL officer. That right there brings a powerful punch in his story telling! The series is about a kid who learns to be a Warrior Kid after his Uncle Jake, a Navy SEAL comes to stay for the summer. He teaches Marc about hard work and that almost anything is possible! He teaches Marc to take responsibility for his life and circumstances. Your boys ~7 and up will adore and want more and more of these!

#2- The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
You can’t be alive and not know of the captivating novels in the Chronicles of Narnia! If you have never read these, stop what you are doing right now and get.these.books. This fantasy series is set in the fictional world of Narnia, a world of magic, mythical beasts, and talking animals. It narrates the adventures of various children who play central roles in the unfolding history of the Narnian world. The characters and storyline are even allegorical of the gospel of Christ. Like I said, these are a must for family read alouds!
#3- Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
This wonderful novel tells the heart-warming story of a lovable barn pig named Wilbur and his enduring friendship with a spider named Charlotte. So well written and an absolute classic. This is one the parents enjoy just as much as the kids! I know the movies are out there, but they don’t come close to replacing the experience of reading it aloud together as a family!
#4- Jotham’s Journey Series by Arnold Ytreeide
Arnold Ytreeide rocks. He is a master storyteller that weaves a gripping storyline around the events of Christmas (in 4 different books) and Easter (in 1 book and another coming out soon). I am finding that my written words are inadequate to explain the wonder and magnificence of these stories!! They are designed to be read aloud as a family in December and in the month leading up to Easter. The fact that each of the main characters arrive at the same place from completely different perspectives with completely different adventures is breathtaking. Really. You MUST read these with your family!
#5- Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
This delightful novel is about the actual experiences of Wilder’s husband, Almonzo, when he grew up on a farm in the 1860s. It covers one year of the 9 year old boy’s life, and the DETAIL. The detail of what life was like back then has painted lasting pictures in all of our heads that we refer to often! An amazing picture of the endless chores to run a farm and keep food on the table. Your boys will be captivated by the adventures of Farmer Boy!
#6- Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner
Oh my- talk about deeply touching. This one had me tearing up as I read (much to my boys’ amusement) but when you read it, you will understand why! A special story of sacrificial love and a story of people with massive differences coming together! The book tells the story of a boy named Little Willy who enters a dog sled race in order to win $500 to pay back the taxes on his grandfather’s farm. A powerful story!
#7- Nate Saint- On a Wing and Prayer by Janet Geoff Benge
Speaking of deeply moving stories (and me full on CRYING), this one created a memory my boys love to re-tell! I was reading it aloud and had to hand it to one of my sons at the time because I couldn’t finish from the tears! I had him read it because, ofcourse, we all wanted to keep hearing what happened! Nate Saint was one of the 5 missionaries martyred in Equador in 1956. It is truly an amazing story that will give your boy vision and encouragment deep in his soul about what God can do in and through His people!
#8- Pilgrim’s Progress (adapted for children by Anna Trimiew)
This fabulous adaptation will take your children on a journey with Christian while learning important truths of the gospel and gaining a richer understanding of Christ’s work in the life of a believer. Many adaptations have been made- but this one is our favorite! It’s a perfect blend of language kids can relate to and understand while being faithful to John Bunyan’s original story!
#9- The Courage of Sarah Noble by Leonard Weisgard
Just because it’s main character is a girl doesn’t stop boys from delighting in this story! It’s sweet, engaging, and short which made us all hate that it was over so soon! This is about an 8 year old girl named Sarah who has to keep her courage in the wilderness even when she doesn’t always feel brave on the inside. Relatable and endearing!
#10- Hero Tales- A Family Treasury of True Stories from the Lives of Christian Heroes by Dave and Neta Jackson
These are exciting and encouraging stores of fifteen different Christian heroes! These powerful tales will inspire and foster character qualities in your boys for sure! These can even be used in a family devotional time as well!
You are giving your boys a priceless gift when you instill in them -a love and appreciation for the written word! What better way to do that than take and make the time to read books aloud to them! These 10 books (or series) are the cream of the crop!
